For the first fifty pages, I was completely baffled by this story. And then... I read with my mouth hanging open - totally mesmerized.

My family is on strict orders to finish this book, just so I have someone to discuss it with!

This is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite books and authors! It's the story of Anna, a poor housmaid, surviving in the Black Plague year of 1666. She grows and changes into a different, stronger woman, despite the sorrow and horrors of daily life. Brooks writes a terrific female character.

This is the story of a love triangle between poet, Fanny Osgood, Edgar Allen Poe, and his wife, Virginia.  It's complete with intrigue, tuberculosis, and repressed Victorian passion.  Mrs. Poe will make you fall in love, at least a little bit, with the mysterious Edgar Allen Poe.

It's Chicago, 1893, and the World's Fair is finally open, after years of craziness and scads of money to get the "White City" built. Boasting the first Ferris wheel and an extremely prolific serial killer, Chicago is definitely the place to be. Larson's book has spawned several television documentaries and a "White City Walking Tour" in Chicago.

London is hit by a violent outbreak of cholera and the prevailing minds of 1854 blame it on "something in the air" or the miasma theory.  Dr. John Snow has other ideas and sets out to prove through mapping, statistics, and personal interviews that cholera is a waterbourne disease.  This is a fascinating look at Victorian culture and medicine.

Charlie Wong is the daughter of a ballerina and a noodle-maker in NYC's Chinatown. She's sort of an ugly duckling, not smart like her younger sister or beautiful like her dead mother.  She gets a job answering phones at a dance school and sometimes fills in as an instructor.  Her life changes, she begins to blossom and she discovers she was a swan, all the time.

Hyde (Hardcover)

This is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde told from Hyde's perspective.  He is a hostage to Dr. Jekyll's whims and demons - trying to live his life as best he can - despite someone trying to frame him for terrible deeds he doesn't remember committing. It also contains the original version of the story, which allows for a great comparison.  I enjoyed Hyde much more than the original.

1930's Paris was a city of art, jazz, tranvestites, and the shadow of war.  The Chameleon Club is a sanctuary for anyone wanting to reinvent themselves.  Told through the voices of an Hungarian photographer, a French Baroness, a bitter American writer, and the biographer of Lou Villars - a lesbian race car driver and suspected Nazi collaborator

It doesn't get much better than a book about weasels, plotting world domination (as weasels do) but throw in fabulously detailed pictures and silly (but true!) engineering mishaps and you get a FANTASTICALLY fun story. Great for detail-oriented kids and those grown-up engineers in your life.

This is the complex story of a man's midlife search for his biological father.  He learns family secrets, meets new family, and learns to appreciate the family he already has.  It was an interesting look at family from a male perspective.

I LOVE this book!  As a "not-popular" child of the 1980's, I could slip right into Eleanor's character.  The author has an unique gift for evoking emotions and memories. This is most definitely not a book for only young adults.

Dorothy went back to Oz and got busy proving that absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Amy Gumm is the OTHER girl from Kansas - sent to depose Dorothy and her fascist regime with the help of some not-so-wicked witches and a couple of flying monkeys. This is a kick-ass story and I cannot wait for the next installment!

I was afraid to even start this book.  The Shining is one of my all-time favorite books and what if its sequal was awful? Happily, it was not awful and I enjoyed it very much.  It was good to visit with Danny Torrance, Wendy, Dick Hallorann, and even the Overlook Hotel.  The 500 pages flew by and I was sad to say goodbye.

I erally enjoyed this book and hope Bill Hodges is a character we see again.
